A Renewed Rivalry
The University of Pittsburgh’s men’s basketball team will welcome West Virginia on Dec. 9 at PPG Paints Arena for the Backyard Basketball Classic, renewing a rivalry that has defined the Backyard Brawl for seven consecutive seasons.
This matchup marks the 193rd meeting between the two programs, a milestone that underscores the long‑standing competition. While West Virginia holds a 102‑90 edge in the all‑time series, Pitt enjoys a 58‑36 advantage when the game is played on its home court in Pittsburgh.
The Panthers enter the game with a markedly different roster. Since last season, the team has added 11 transfers and two freshmen, creating a blend of experience and youthful talent that coach Jeff Capel believes can compete at a higher level.
Capel’s staff will also feature new faces: alumni Ricardo Greer and Ronald Ramón have joined the coaching crew, bringing former player insight and a fresh perspective to the program’s development.
Season tickets are now on sale, and holders will receive first access to seats for the Backyard Basketball Classic. The event is positioned as more than a regular home game; it offers a revenue opportunity and a platform to showcase Pitt’s ambition to create memorable fan experiences.
University athletic director Allen Greene emphasized that the game represents a bold decision to compete aggressively in college athletics, aiming to strengthen the program’s profile and deepen community engagement.
Beyond the on‑court action, the matchup will be integrated into Pitt’s broader season‑ticket package, with additional details about pricing and seating to be announced later this summer.
