Athletic director Josh Calame revealed that the Big Red program will play an eight‑player schedule in the 2026 season, a change driven by a steady decline in participation that saw the roster shrink from 23 athletes at the start of 2025 to roughly 15 by season’s end.
The move comes after years of underperformance, with the team posting a 1‑9 record in 2025 and posting losing seasons in each of the past three years. In 2025 the squad could not field a full practice group, limiting intra‑squad scrimmages and forcing a Week 9 contest to be played under running‑clock rules.
Conference Approval and Structural Limits
The Northern 8 Conference, which includes schools such as Chalker, Danbury and Windham, has given its blessing to the transition. Because eight‑man football is not sanctioned by the Ohio High School Athletic Association, Plymouth will be unable to compete for a state championship, a constraint that shapes the program’s long‑term ambitions.
Coach Calame emphasized that the new format is not a permanent retreat but a strategic reset. By reducing the number of players on the field, the team hopes to increase intensity, improve execution and generate renewed interest among students and the broader community.
Recent on‑field moments hint at the potential upside. A 20‑12 victory over New London in Week 7 of 2025 marked the program’s first Firelands Conference win since 2022, suggesting that when the roster clicks, success is attainable.
