Portland Hearts of Pine, the city’s men’s professional soccer franchise, announced this week that it will field a women’s team beginning in 2027, marking a historic expansion for the club.
A community‑driven vision
The initiative grew out of years of dialogue with fans, local schools and civic leaders who repeatedly voiced support for a women’s side that could mirror the men’s commitment to player development and community outreach.
The new franchise will compete in the USL W League, a pre‑professional circuit known for nurturing talent that aspires to reach the professional ranks. League officials highlighted the league’s affordability and accessibility compared with higher‑tier leagues, making it an ideal platform for the Hearts’ developmental goals.
Recruiting the next generation
Organizers said the roster will prioritize Division I college players, aiming to blend home‑grown talent with experienced prospects who can help raise the team’s competitive edge from the outset.
To shape the brand, the organization held a series of town halls where supporters suggested names, colors and community symbols, ensuring the women’s side reflects the same neighborhood pride that has defined the men’s team.
Home field and future plans
Fitzpatrick Stadium will serve as the primary venue, and the club has secured additional dates to accommodate a full home schedule. The expanded calendar is intended to provide fans with more opportunities to experience live soccer while the team builds its presence in the Northeast division.
Beyond the pitch, the Hearts of Pine said the women’s franchise will collaborate with local schools and youth clubs, offering clinics and mentorship programs designed to inspire the next wave of female athletes across Maine and the broader region.
