The Portland Pilots men's soccer program has announced that three of its standout athletes have been selected for the MAC Hermann Trophy watch list, a preseason honor that highlights the nation's top collegiate talent.
A Historic Watch List Representation
Goalkeeper Miguel-Angel Hernandez earned the nod after a season that saw him post a .624 goals-against average and a .786 save percentage, numbers that placed him second in the West Region and topped the conference in save rate. His All-WCC Second Team selection and All-West Region First Team accolade reflect a defensive performance that helped the Pilots concede just 15 goals in 18 matches.
Forward Joe Highfield also made the list, having been recognized on multiple preseason watchlists and earning United Soccer Coaches Forward to Watch honors. Last season he ranked second in the WCC with 11 goals and 27 points, and his efforts secured All-WCC First Team, All-West Region First Team and United Soccer Coaches All-American Third Team honors.
Midfielder Diego Rosas rounded out the trio, breaking the program record for assists with 15 and leading the nation in that category. His performance earned him WCC Midfielder of the Year, a spot on the All-West Region First Team and a place on the TopDrawerSoccer Preseason Best XI.
The Pilots' coaching staff notes that the trio's recognitions are not isolated; Portland will field four preseason All-WCC selections, the most in program history, underscoring the depth of talent across the roster.
Projected to finish first in the West Coast Conference, the team opens its campaign against the California Golden Bears on August 21 at Merlo Field, with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m.
With the trio’s accolades setting a high bar, the Pilots enter the season with heightened expectations, aiming to translate individual brilliance into collective success on the national stage.
