A Legendary Reunion in Rhode Island
On June 28, the city of Providence will host a special gathering that brings together two of Portugal’s most celebrated football figures, Nuno Ricardo de Oliveira Ribeiro, known simply as Maniche, and former international defender Marco Caneira.
Maniche, a stalwart of FC Porto’s historic 2004 UEFA Champions League triumph and a key member of Portugal’s runner‑up squad at Euro 2004, will share memories of a career that spanned six European leagues and earned 52 caps for his country.
Joining him will be Marco Caneira, who amassed 25 appearances for Portugal across three World Cup cycles and built his professional résumé in Portugal, Italy, France, Spain and Hungary before hanging up his boots in 2015.
A Celebration of Portuguese Heritage
The appearance forms part of the Portugal Futebol Experience, an initiative that celebrates Portuguese heritage while counting down to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, offering fans a chance to connect with the nation’s sporting legends.
Organisers say the event will blend storytelling, photo opportunities and a chance for supporters in the United States to engage with the icons who helped shape a golden era for Portuguese football.
Beyond his club successes, Maniche is remembered for his stamina, teamwork and a powerful long‑range shot that made him a fan favourite at Porto, Chelsea, Atlético Madrid, Dynamo Moscow, FC Köln, Inter Milan, Bordeaux and Valencia.
His trophy cabinet includes domestic titles in Portugal, England, Italy and Spain, as well as a place among the exclusive group of players who have represented all three of Portugal’s traditional “Big Three” clubs — SL Benfica, FC Porto and Sporting CP.
The meet‑and‑greet will take place at a venue in downtown Providence, where attendees can expect an intimate setting that mirrors the excitement surrounding the upcoming World Cup.
