A lively soccer shootout unfolded last weekend at the Potsdam High School field, drawing 66 young athletes from across the North Country. The event, organized by the Potsdam Elks Lodge, featured four age divisions that combined boys’ and girls’ competition in a series of skill‑based challenges.
The under‑8, under‑10, under‑12 and under‑14 brackets each crowned a set of champions. In the U‑8 Girls division, Elizabeth Russell took first place, while Jaxson Boeitcher emerged victorious in the corresponding boys’ bracket. Margaret Zahler captured the U‑10 Girls title, and Koa Shyaka did the same for the U‑10 Boys. Aubrey LaVoie led the U‑12 Girls field, and Luke Stone topped the U‑12 Boys. Finally, Nora claimed the U‑14 Girls crown and Gaston LaCourse secured the U‑14 Boys honor.
Pathway to the District Contest
The top finishers will advance to a district‑level contest scheduled for September 20 at the Lowville Elks Lodge. That tournament will bring together the best youth players from the region, offering a final stage for the next generation of local talent.
Volunteers such as Fallon O’Neil and Mike Neaton helped coordinate logistics, set up equipment and keep the day running smoothly. Other volunteers, including Mike Pinckney and Emily Pinckney, assisted with registration and scorekeeping.
Potsdam Elks Lodge’s youth director, speaking on behalf of the organization, praised the families and coaches who supported the participants. He noted that events like this not only sharpen athletic ability but also reinforce community ties, ensuring that the spirit of sport continues to thrive in the area.
