Priest River Spartans Aim for State Title After Rebuilding Roster

Coach Alex Zepeda and a refreshed lineup look to translate early promise into a championship run

Priest River High School’s football program is entering a rebuilding phase after losing several star players from the previous season including Brady Hatten and quarterback Lucas Matthews. Despite the departures the Spartans are optimistic as they bring back key contributors and add new talent to the mix.

Head coach Alex Zepeda has been at the helm guiding the team through offseason work and a recent appearance at the Whitworth football camp where they were praised as the best team on the field. Zepeda’s emphasis on daily discipline and skill development sets the tone for the upcoming season.

A Strong Showing at Whitworth

Returning seniors such as Colton Kupreinko the 2025 3A Central Idaho League MVP and All League standouts Nate Fegert and Layton Goins provide experience on offense. Kane Berns and Madden Redinger are expected to be major pass catchers while Jacob Best a baseball standout has taken over at quarterback and is quickly learning the playbook.

On defense the Spartans feature All League linebacker Lane Owens and sophomore defensive tackle Gunner Neal who will anchor the front. Versatile player Haiden Leach adds depth and the unit is overseen by defensive coordinator Brandon Goins who stresses tackling and forcing turnovers.

Defensive Focus and Turnover Goals

The schedule includes eight games beginning with an away matchup against Bonners Ferry on August 28 and culminating with a potential title deciding contest against Grangeville later in the season. Both games are seen as critical for the 3A Idaho Central League race.

Schedule and Title Implications

Leadership will be provided by captains Jacob Best Kane Berns Layton Goins and Nate Fegert who are expected to lead by example as the team pursues its first state title in years.
