A New Era for Women’s Hockey
The Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) revealed on Tuesday that it will add two new franchises for the 2026‑27 season, one in Las Vegas, Nevada, and another in Hamilton, Ontario. The decision follows the recent addition of a Detroit team and brings the league to eleven clubs.
PWHL Las Vegas will call the T‑Mobile Arena its home, a venue already shared with the NHL’s Vegas Golden Knights and supported by MGM Resorts International. The franchise’s branding will feature green and gold, colors chosen to reflect the city’s vibrant energy.
In Hamilton, the new team will play at the TD Coliseum, a historic arena backed by Oak View Group and the City of Hamilton. Its palette of gold, maroon and cream was selected to honor the region’s rich hockey tradition.
Community Foundations and Future Growth
Both expansions were driven by the strength of local hockey communities. Organizers highlighted Hamilton’s high participation rates among girls’ teams and Las Vegas’s growing interest in women’s sports as key factors in the selection process.
Commissioner Jayna Hefford emphasized that the league is committed to building sustainable markets that can support elite competition and inspire the next generation of players. “Our goal is to create a stable platform where talent can thrive,” she said.
Amy Latimer, a former Olympian and now a league executive, added that the new teams will also serve as community hubs, offering youth clinics and outreach programs. “We want the sport to be accessible at every level,” she noted.
Details on merchandise and ticket sales will be released in the coming weeks, with plans to integrate the franchises into the 2026 PWHL Draft. Further expansion announcements are expected later this year.
