A New Era for Women’s Hockey
The Professional Women’s Hockey League announced that two new franchises will begin play in the 2026‑27 season, bringing the total number of teams to an unprecedented level.
Las Vegas will field a club that adopts a striking green and gold palette drawn from the desert landscape of Southern Nevada, a visual echo of the city’s NHL counterpart, the Vegas Golden Knights, who captured the Stanley Cup just six years after their debut.
The Las Vegas franchise will call the T‑Mobile Arena home, sharing the venue with the Golden Knights and leveraging the city’s rapidly expanding sports ecosystem that has already made it a hub for major events.
Across the border, Hamilton, Ontario, will field a team whose colors — gold, maroon and cream — reflect a blend of tradition and modernity, and will play out of the historic TD Coliseum, a venue with deep roots in Canadian hockey.
League officials cited the city’s strong grassroots participation in girls’ and women’s hockey as a key factor in the selection, underscoring a commitment to nurture talent from the community upward.
The expansion also welcomes Detroit, which will join Las Vegas and Hamilton in the upcoming season, further diversifying the league’s geographic footprint.
With existing clubs in Boston, Minnesota, Montréal, New York, Ottawa, Seattle, Toronto and Vancouver, the PWHL is positioning itself as the premier professional platform for women’s hockey, a vision that league leadership says is only beginning to unfold.
