After eight seasons directing the Providence College women’s hockey team, Matt Kelly announced his resignation on Sunday, ending a tenure that placed the Friars among the most competitive programs in Hockey East.
Kelly will now guide the U‑19 squad at Bishop Kearney, where he plans to blend his extensive scouting background with player development for the next generation of talent.
During his eight‑year stint, Kelly compiled a 136‑78‑21 record in Hockey East and previously served as a scout for USA’s U‑18 national team and the 2018 Olympic roster, underscoring his deep connections to the sport.
Providence has appointed Nicole Norton, who has spent the past six years with the program after a previous role at Long Island University, as interim head coach.
Katie Burt, an assistant coach for five seasons, will serve as interim associate head coach, reinforcing the staff’s continuity during the transition.

Athletic director Steve Napolillo issued a statement thanking Kelly for his contributions and expressing confidence in Norton’s ability to lead the program forward, noting the team’s strong foundation and the continuity of its coaching staff.
The transition marks the start of a fresh season for the Friars, with officials emphasizing that the existing coaching framework will ensure stability while new ideas are introduced to sustain competitive success on the ice.
