The Atlantic Coast Conference announced this week that Pualani Spurlock-Welsh will serve as its new Supervisor of Women’s Basketball Officials, a role that will extend to the American and Big East conferences as well.
A Veteran’s Journey
Spurlock-Welsh arrives after more than a decade and a half of service as a Division I college basketball referee, a path that began on the courts of Greenville, Pennsylvania, where she first earned recognition for her precision and composure.
Since 2011 she has been a regular presence at the NCAA Tournament, officiating seven regional finals and four Final Fours, and she has also contributed to the WNBA, the NBA G League and international competitions.
In her new capacity she will direct the officiating programs for the three conferences, ensuring a consistent standard of play and providing mentorship to emerging officials across the country.
Leadership and Vision
Big East Commissioner Val Ackerman praised the hire, noting that Spurlock-Welsh’s “wealth of knowledge and experience” will strengthen the conference’s commitment to student‑athletes and the integrity of the game.
American Commissioner Tim Pernetti added that her “distinguished career and positive impact on the game” make her the ideal leader for the newly formalized women’s basketball officiating alliance that will be announced later this summer.
Beyond the court, Spurlock-Welsh’s academic background includes a bachelor’s degree from Duquesne University and a master’s from Slippery Rock University, where she also served as a graduate assistant for the women’s basketball program.
Her contributions were recognized in 2021 when she was inducted into the Greenville High School Athletic Hall of Fame, a testament to her lasting influence on the sport.
