The idea emerged after the Boilermakers completed a four‑game swing through Canada in July, a stretch that sparked conversation among analysts about a possible guard‑heavy rotation.
If the experiment moves forward, the starting backcourt could feature Luke Ertel, Antione West Jr., Gicarri Harris, Jack Benter and Caden Pierce, while Omer Mayer may also see minutes at the point.
Head coach Matt Painter has hinted that the staff is willing to try three point guards together — Ertel, West and Mayer — to exploit their ability to push the tempo and create quick three‑point looks.
A New Tactical Direction
The proposed offensive scheme would lean on a run‑and‑gun philosophy, using the guards’ skill at taking opponents off the dribble and finishing at the rim, while Benter would patrol the perimeter.
Defensively, the lack of traditional rim protection and rebounding size presents a clear challenge; the team would need to double post players and rely on forced turnovers to compensate.
