Purdue Basketball Promotes P.J. Thompson, Expands Assistant Coach Payroll

New salary figures reveal a strategic investment in the program’s coaching staff as the Boilermakers target national contention.

Purdue University announced this week that P.J. Thompson has been elevated to associate head coach of the Boilermakers men’s basketball program, accompanied by a raise that lifts his annual compensation from $400,000 to $600,000.

A Strategic Investment in Coaching

The move, confirmed in April, reflects Thompson’s rapid ascent since his return to West Lafayette in 2019, when he came back after a brief professional playing stint and quickly became a central figure in the team’s offensive scheme.

Under his guidance the offense posted the best adjusted efficiency score in KenPom’s metrics last season, and he played a pivotal role in shaping Braden Smith into the NCAA’s all‑time assists leader.

The salary adjustment is part of a broader package that also includes raises for several assistants on Matt Painter’s staff, pushing the total assistant coach payroll to $2.05 million, up from $1.85 million the previous year.

Compensation details also reveal that Painter himself will earn a base salary of $4.325 million, supplemented by a $300,000 retirement contribution, a $300,000 life‑insurance premium and a $250,000 retention bonus should he remain employed through September 1, bringing his total package to $5.175 million.

The financial commitments underscore Purdue’s intent to retain a coaching core that has consistently positioned the program among the nation’s elite, while also signaling to prospective recruits that the university invests heavily in its basketball infrastructure.
