Purdue head coach Matt Painter announced recently that the 2026‑27 season will mark a significant transition for the Boilermakers, as three of the program’s most celebrated recent recruits will not return.
Braden Smith, Fletcher Loyer and Trey Kaufman‑Renn, who together amassed more than 5,400 points and a 117‑32 record during their college careers, are moving on after the university’s historic recruiting class. Smith has signed with the Indiana Pacers, Loyer is headed to the Los Angeles Clippers, and Kaufman‑Renn was drafted by the Minnesota Timberwolves.
A New Roster Takes Shape
The returning core will feature guard C.J. Cox alongside forward Gicarri Harris, while big men Omer Mayer and the newly arrived transfer Enzo Shahrvin will add size and rebounding presence. Freshman Luke Ertel also joins the backcourt, giving the team a blend of experience and youthful energy.
Painter said the Boilermakers will focus on increasing their physicality in the paint and winning the battle on the glass, aiming to stay competitive against traditional Big Ten powerhouses such as Michigan and Michigan State. He believes that the mix of interior toughness and perimeter skill gives Purdue a realistic chance to remain a national contender.
