Purdue is gearing up for the 2026 football season, with its first test coming on September 4 when the Boilermakers travel to face Indiana State.
The team’s secondary will be anchored by junior safety Smiley Bradford, who has emerged as a pivotal piece of the defense.
Standing at 6‑0 and 195 pounds, Bradford hails from East St. Louis High School in Illinois, where he built a reputation for delivering hard hits.
During his true freshman year in 2024 he appeared in five games and started four, recording 17 tackles.
In the following season he saw action in 12 games, making one start and posting 30 tackles, five tackles for loss, seven pass breakups and an interception.
Expectations for 2026
Coaches and analysts alike anticipate a breakout year for Bradford, who is praised for his instincts in run support and his ability to generate big hits.
The upcoming matchup against Indiana State will serve as an early gauge of how the defense clicks, and Bradford’s performance could set the tone for the remainder of the schedule.
