Purdue University’s football program has added its first defensive player to the 2027 recruiting class, securing a commitment from three‑star cornerback Gianni Porfilio of Huntington Beach, California.
Porfilio, listed at 6‑foot‑2 and 175 pounds, chose the Boilermakers over a slate of Pacific‑time conference offers that included Arizona, Washington State, and Oregon State.
During his senior season at Mount Miguel High School, he logged 22 tackles, two interceptions and two forced fumbles, while also contributing 86 receiving yards and a touchdown on seven catches.
The pledge marks a departure from Purdue’s recent 2027 haul, which had been dominated by offensive skill positions, and reflects the staff’s expanding footprint in California.
It also follows the earlier verbal commitment of 2026 quarterback Corin Berry from Covina Charter Oak, underscoring a growing pipeline of West Coast talent into West Lafayette.
A California Connection Takes Shape
Coach Ryan Silverstein’s defensive coordinator praised Porfilio’s ball‑hawking instincts and versatility, noting that his size and speed fit the modern Big Ten scheme.
Rivals ranks the prospect No. 1,222 nationally, a rating that aligns with the Boilermakers’ strategy of targeting under‑the‑radar players who can develop into impact contributors.
The commitment comes as Purdue looks to bolster a secondary that has seen turnover in recent years, aiming to return to contention in the East Division.
Fans and analysts alike will be watching how the new recruit integrates into the roster ahead of the 2027 season, with many expecting his arrival to signal a shift in the program’s recruiting narrative.
