Purdue University is poised to reshape its defensive front as the 2026 season approaches, with a deep and experienced edge rusher group that could become the most formidable unit on the Boilermakers' roster.
The core of that group returns in the form of senior standouts CJ Madden, Trey Smith and Breeon Ishmail, each of whom contributed double‑digit tackles for loss in recent campaigns. Madden led the squad with 2.5 sacks last year, while Smith logged 15 tackles and a sack in 2025, and Ishmail topped the unit with 23 tackles, two sacks and a forced fumble.
A Revamped Pass‑Rush Attack
Adding to the mix are three high‑profile transfers who bring a blend of Power Five experience and junior‑college pedigree. Keyshawn Burgos arrives from Virginia Tech, where he amassed 61 career tackles and 7.5 tackles for loss, while Jeremy Lewis, a junior‑college All‑American, posted 41 tackles and 15.5 tackles for loss in 2025. Elo Modozie, who previously starred at Army before a stint at Georgia, contributed 34 tackles and 6.5 sacks during his Army tenure.
The coaching staff, led by head coach Barry Odom, has emphasized continuity and depth, noting that the Boilermakers will field six seasoned edge rushers heading into the new season. Odom highlighted the importance of leveraging this depth to free up linebackers and create opportunities for the secondary.
Freshmen such as Aiden Solecki, Katrell Webb and Maximillian Carmicle are expected to provide additional spark. Solecki entered campus as a three‑star prospect with a high school record of 107 tackles and 14 sacks, while Webb compiled 166 tackles, 54 tackles for loss and 30 sacks before arriving in West Lafayette. Carmicle, another three‑star recruit, brings 86 tackles, 20 tackles for loss and 8.5 sacks from his prep career.
The cumulative effect of returning production, strategic transfers and promising newcomers could translate into a significant uptick in pass‑rushing efficiency. With Purdue having recorded 24 sacks in 2025 but losing four of its top five leaders from the previous year, the added depth offers a realistic pathway to improve the defense and generate more turnovers.
