A setback on the line
Joey Tanona, Purdue’s 6‑6, 310‑pound offensive tackle, endured an ankle sprain during a recent practice, forcing him to miss the final three sessions and a scrimmage. The injury has cast doubt on his availability for the opening game, though coaches remain optimistic that he will be ready by the start of Week 1.
With Tanona sidelined, the Boilermakers have turned to Nuku Mafi, a transfer from Oklahoma State, to man the left tackle spot. Mafi’s move into the starting lineup not only fills the immediate void but also adds a fresh dynamic to the offensive front as the team prepares for its first test.
The injury toll extends beyond Tanona. Tight end Kylan Fox and defensive back Raderrion Daniels have both been ruled out for the season after sustaining knee injuries in camp, further thinning the roster heading into the September 4 showdown with Indiana State.
Purdue’s season opener is slated for September 4 against Indiana State, a matchup that will reveal how the revamped line performs under pressure. While the Boilermakers hope to have Tanona back in the fold soon, the early games will likely be defined by the adaptability of newcomers like Mafi.
Looking ahead
Coaches are emphasizing continuity and resilience as the squad navigates the early schedule. The depth chart will be reassessed weekly, and the staff is already exploring options should Tanona’s recovery take longer than anticipated.
