Quincy University Expands Women's Sports with Flag Football
Quincy University (QU) will introduce women's flag football as a varsity sport beginning in the 2027‑28 academic year, a move that will bring the school's total athletic offerings to 29 disciplines, with 15 dedicated to women.
The decision comes as the sport experiences unprecedented momentum across the Midwest. The Illinois High School Association (IHSA) officially sanctioned girls' flag football in 2024, and more than 200 high schools in the state now field teams, giving many athletes a clear pathway to college competition.
Josh Rabe, QU's Athletic Director, emphasized that flag football is not only the fastest‑growing sport but also aligns with the university's academic mission. "We see tremendous value in a sport that promotes teamwork, strategy and scholarship," he said, adding that the program will soon seek a head coach and begin recruiting players.
University President Brian McGee echoed the sentiment, noting that the expansion was "almost inevitable" given the rapid adoption of the sport at the high school level and the broader interest across the region.
Collegiate flag football follows a 7‑on‑7, non‑contact format on an 80‑yard field, divided into four 12‑minute quarters. Scoring mirrors traditional football: touchdowns count for six points, with the option of one‑point or two‑point conversion attempts after each score.
The new program will share facilities with the existing lacrosse teams, allowing for efficient use of the university's stadium and practice fields. Rabe confirmed that hiring a dedicated coach is a top priority, and that scholarships will be offered to attract talented recruits.
The addition of flag football underscores Quincy University's commitment to expanding opportunities for female athletes, reinforcing a broader trend across Midwestern institutions that are adding women's flag football programs to meet growing demand.
