Racing Toward Inclusion: NASCAR’s Push for Diversity and Youth Engagement

A panel at the Atlanta Voice highlights pathways in engineering, AI, and technology for underserved communities

A New Vision for Motorsports

At a recent gathering in Atlanta, NASCAR driver Rajah Caruth joined forces with Brandon Thompson of NASCAR and TaiJaune Robinson of GM Motorsports to discuss how the sport is reaching out to underserved youth.

The conversation, moderated by Gerald “The Sound” Keys and Darrell Booker, highlighted the scarcity of Black professionals in motorsports, noting that fewer than one percent of Formula 1 employees identify as Black according to The Hamilton Commission.

Panelists explained how simulators serve as early‑stage talent scouts, feeding promising candidates into the NASCAR Driver Development Program where mentors guide them toward careers in engineering, artificial intelligence, technology and data science.

Robinson stressed that innovation in racing depends on a diversity of thought, urging the industry to broaden its talent pipeline beyond traditional pathways.

By pairing young drivers with experienced mentors and showcasing the high‑tech side of the sport, NASCAR aims to create clear career maps for the next generation of engineers and technologists.
