A court in Valencia has sentenced former Valencia CF forward Rafa Mir to eight and a half years in prison after finding him guilty of sexually assaulting two women at his home in 2024.
A court in Valencia has handed down a hefty sentence
The convictions stem from incidents that took place in the spring of 2024, when Mir invited the women to his residence and subjected them to unwanted sexual contact. Prosecutors presented evidence of repeated assaults, and the jury concluded that consent had not been freely given.
Mir, who had been playing for Valencia CF during the 2023‑24 La Liga season after a loan spell at Elche, saw his contract with the club expire at the end of the month. The case also brought renewed scrutiny to the broader culture of abuse within Spanish football.
The co‑defendant, identified as Pablo J. G., received a shorter term of two and a half years for his role in the same attacks. Both sentences were handed down by the same tribunal, which emphasized the seriousness of the offenses.
Mir has maintained his denial of wrongdoing, insisting that the encounters were consensual. His legal team has indicated that they will lodge an appeal, a move that could delay the enforcement of the prison term.
