Rafael Fichandler, a former intern with the Pittsburgh Penguins and a seasoned hockey operations professional, has been selected as the 16th recipient of the Brendan Burke Internship, a program that pairs emerging leaders with USA Hockey’s National Team Development Program.
From Compliance to International Play
During his tenure with the Penguins, Fichandler coordinated player interactions, managed NHL compliance databases, and oversaw major foundation events, while also building a data‑tracking system that informed executive decisions and supported game‑day operations.
His scouting work with the Strathroy Rockets and his role as director of game‑day operations for the University of Pittsburgh further honed his ability to bridge grassroots scouting with high‑level event management.
Academic Foundations and Athletic Roots
A graduate of the University of Pittsburgh with a bachelor’s degree in business administration, concentrating on finance and analytics, Fichandler also earned four letters in high school hockey, captained his team, and received the Connecticut Hobey Baker Character Award for his leadership and sportsmanship.
In his new position, he will collaborate with U.S. national teams, assist at international tournaments, and contribute to player development camps, gaining hands‑on experience across the breadth of USA Hockey’s operations.
