A fresh start for Hawaii’s Rainbow Wahine
The University of Hawaii’s women’s soccer squad is set to open its season on Thursday, Aug. 13, against Big 12 powerhouses Texas Tech and Kansas State. After a modest four‑win campaign last year, the team is eager to translate offseason work into an immediate impact on the field.
Head coach Kennedy Justin, who took the helm this spring, has overseen a complete overhaul of the roster. Eleven new faces arrive, including seven true freshmen and four transfers, while the existing players have embraced a mentorship role, creating a welcoming atmosphere for the newcomers.
A journey to Maui and a shared memory
In early August the Rainbow Wahine will travel to Maui for an exhibition match against Seattle University, a game that will feature seven players with ties to the island. The contest lands on the anniversary of the devastating wildfires that reshaped Lahaina, a date that carries personal significance for many on the team whose families still feel the aftershocks.
Coach Justin highlighted the trip as more than a tactical exercise, noting that the players will use the occasion to honor those affected and to strengthen the bond that has formed within the squad. The match will be streamed live on KFVE beginning at 6:30 p.m., giving fans across the state a chance to follow the action.
The upcoming season promises a blend of youthful energy and seasoned leadership as the Rainbow Wahine aim to translate their revamped roster into competitive performances from the first whistle.
