Rangers secure Schneider with bridge contract
The New York Rangers have locked in Braden Schneider through a one-year, $5.5 million contract, a move that settles a restricted free-agent standoff that had lingered through the offseason.
Schneider, a 24-year-old defenseman, had filed for salary arbitration with a hearing set for July 29 and his prior two-year, $4.4 million deal expired after the 2025-26 season.
After gauging the trade market, the club and the player reached a bridge agreement, a compromise that reflects both the team’s desire to retain a home-grown talent and Schneider’s ambition to prove his worth.
General manager Chris Drury praised the deal, highlighting Schneider’s blend of skill and character, and noting that the organization values his contributions both on and off the ice.
The Rangers have also bolstered their blue line this summer, adding Sean Durzi and Marcus Pettersson, moves that could reshape ice time and potentially limit Schneider’s role in the upcoming 2026-27 campaign.
While the short-term contract provides financial certainty, the team’s long-term plans for the defenseman remain unsettled, with his future beyond next summer still dependent on performance and roster needs.
Schneider will again become a restricted free agent next July, a timeline that adds a layer of uncertainty to his tenure in New York and leaves the door open for further negotiations.
