The New York Rangers announced on Tuesday that they have reached an agreement with 23‑year‑old defenseman Vincent Iorio, inking him to a one‑year contract that will pay him a modest salary against the salary cap.
Iorio, a native of Coquitlam, British Columbia, joins the club after a season in which he was claimed off waivers by New York on January 31, adding depth to a blue line that has been seeking additional stability.
Selected 55th overall in the second round of the 2021 NHL Entry Draft by the Washington Capitals, Iorio spent four seasons with the Brandon Wheat Kings of the Western Hockey League, where he posted 82 points in 191 games, showcasing his playmaking ability.
From WHL Prospect to AHL Standout
After being drafted, Iorio moved to the American Hockey League, first suiting up for the San Jose Barracuda before earning a regular spot with the Hershey Bears, the affiliate of the Washington Capitals.
In Hershey, he contributed to two consecutive Calder Cup championships, posting 63 points over four AHL seasons and adding seven points in 31 playoff games.
His NHL résumé includes 36 games spread across three franchises — the Capitals, the San Jose Sharks and the Rangers — where he has recorded three assists and a defensive reliability that reflects his steady development.
Iorio’s most recent NHL stint came during the 2023‑24 season, when he appeared in a single playoff game for the Capitals, a brief but memorable experience that underscored his perseverance.
A Promising Future in New York
General manager Chris Drury has been active in shaping the roster, and the recent contract with Iorio reflects the team’s strategy to bolster depth with a player who has proven success at the AHL level.
The organization views the move as a continuation of its commitment to developing young talent, a philosophy that aligns with Iorio’s career trajectory and his potential to contribute at the NHL level.
