Ranney’s dominant performance secures semifinal berth
On Thursday, May 28, the Shore Conference baseball scoreboard highlighted the NJSIAA State Tournament Sectional Quarterfinals, where the Ranney School baseball team faced off against St. Rose. The contest ended in a decisive 13‑0 victory for Ranney after five innings, a result that advances the team to the sectional semifinals.
Ricky Lopez was the offensive engine, finishing 4‑for‑4 at the plate and driving in five runs. His two‑run single in the second inning opened the scoring, and a bases‑clearing double in the fourth capped a seven‑run burst that put the game out of reach.
Pitcher Jake Abrams complemented the offense with a stellar outing, tossing four shutout innings while allowing only three hits and no walks. He also contributed a two‑out, two‑strike, two‑run single in the bottom of the third, underscoring his dual role as a reliable arm and a timely bat.
The win was characterized by clutch hitting, as eleven of Ranney’s 13 runs scored with two outs, illustrating the team’s composure under pressure. St. Rose’s starter, Peter Nolan, lasted only three innings, surrendering six runs before being replaced.
Ranney now prepares to meet the winner of the Gloucester Catholic versus Princeton Day matchup in the semifinals, a prospect that has the program’s fans optimistic about a deep run in the state tournament.
