Rashford’s Return and the Red Deal
Marcus Rashford is poised to return to Manchester United for the upcoming campaign after a six‑month absence that began with his substitution in a Europa League win over Viktoria Plzen in December 2024. The England international, who still has two years remaining on his contract, has been linked with a permanent exit as the club looks to trim its wage bill.
His spell away from Old Trafford has taken him to Aston Villa and, more recently, Barcelona, where he contributed a decisive goal in a 2‑0 victory over Real Madrid that sealed the La Liga title. Rashford has publicly expressed a desire to re‑sign for Barcelona, but the Spanish side opted instead for England’s Anthony Gordon, leaving United free to consider other options.
United’s management, led by new permanent boss Michael Carrick, would prefer to offload Rashford rather than retain him, yet the market has shown limited appetite for the forward. The rupture in his relationship with former manager Ruben Amorim, who omitted him from a match without elaboration, has added urgency to the situation, though Amorim later cited selection reasons for the decision.
Carrick’s Vision
Carrick, who was confirmed as the club’s permanent manager in late May after a caretaker spell, guided United back into the Champions League with a third‑place finish last season. He is now gearing the squad for a series of six pre‑season friendlies, beginning with a match against Wrexham in Helsinki on 18 July, and says he is eager to lead the team to success in both the Premier League and European competition.
