Ravenwood's Historic Penalty Shootout Victory
Ravenwood captured its first Class AAA TSSAA boys soccer state championship on Tuesday, edging Bearden 1-0 after a tense penalty kick shootout. The match, played under stormy skies, ended with a 3-1 advantage in the shootout, sealing a triumph that had eluded the program in its previous two title attempts.
Connor Shave emerged as the decisive figure, making a crucial save that swung momentum in Ravenwood's favor. His composure under pressure helped the Ravens convert three of four spot‑kicks while Bearden could only manage a single strike.
Both teams entered the final with national recognition, with Bearden holding the No. 2 spot in MaxPreps' rankings and No. 22 in the United Soccer Coaches poll, while Ravenwood sat at No. 4 in MaxPreps but was unranked by the Coaches. The victory marks a rare milestone for a program that had never before lifted the state trophy.
The championship game was further complicated by a lightning delay and several downpours that tested the players' endurance. Despite the weather, the squads persisted, turning adverse conditions into a backdrop for a memorable showdown.
Coach Michael Reed, who has guided the Ravens for five seasons and previously captained Nashville SC in MLS, described the win as "very raw and rare," underscoring the emotional weight of finally breaking through after two prior finals defeats.
