Ravenwood Stuns Mt. Juliet in Historic Girls Flag Football Championship
The inaugural TSSAA Class AA girls flag football state championship delivered a dramatic turnaround on Saturday night, as the Ravenwood Raptors erased a 25‑point deficit to defeat the Mt. Juliet Bears 27‑25. The final scoreboard read 27‑25, but the story was defined by a 27‑point surge in the second half that left the crowd on the edge of their seats.
At the heart of the rally was quarterback Caroline Merville, who was named both the game’s MVP and the tournament’s most valuable player. Merville completed 20 of 28 passes for 212 yards and three touchdowns, while also adding 38 rushing yards and a touchdown run. Her four total touchdowns — three through the air and one on the ground — were the catalyst for the comeback.
The decisive moment arrived with just 51 seconds left on the clock, when Merville threaded a 20‑yard pass to Alexandria Joyce, who sprinted into the end zone to put Ravenwood ahead for the first time. Joyce finished the game with eight receptions for 94 yards and two scores, sealing the victory with a play that will be replayed in highlight reels for weeks.
Ravenwood head coach Ricky Rodriguez, who guided the Raptors to a BlueCross Bowl runner‑up finish the previous season, praised the team’s resilience. ‘We knew we had the talent, but it was heart that turned the tide,’ Rodriguez said, noting that the Raptors had won 20 straight elimination games and entered the championship with a 21‑2 record.
Mt. Juliet had seemed poised for an easy victory after freshman Ryleigh Clayton hauled in her third touchdown catch of the night, a 20‑yard reception that capped a 25‑0 lead with 9:01 left in the third quarter. Clayton finished with seven receptions for 132 yards and three scores, while Bears quarterback Addy Osborne was 17‑of‑29 for 214 yards.
The championship also marked a milestone for the TSSAA, which organized the first ever Class AA girls flag football state title. With the Raptors’ triumph, the organization underscored the growing popularity of the sport across Tennessee, a sentiment echoed by officials at the governing body, the TSSAA, whose website can be found at tssaa.org.
