Ray Alvarado, a longtime fixture of the Central Valley basketball scene, has officially taken the reins as the permanent head coach of the Cal State Bakersfield women’s program, ending a brief interim stint that left many wondering about the program’s direction.
Alvarado arrives with three decades of coaching experience, a résumé that spans high schools in the San Joaquin Valley, College of the Sequoias, and a stint as associate head coach at Hawai'i Pacific University, where he helped shape talent that later moved on to Division I.
His reputation rests on a disciplined, up‑tempo offensive scheme paired with a hard‑nosed, blue‑collar defensive identity — principles he cultivated while guiding the College of the Sequoias team to a CCCAA State Championship Final Four in 2022 and earning five Central Valley Conference Coach of the Year awards.
Beyond the X’s and O’s, Alvarado stresses a culture built on toughness, family and unselfishness, aiming to recruit locally and give back to the communities that raised him.
