Early Pressure Sets the Tone
Arkansas entered the night at Razorback Field facing a formidable opponent, the seventh-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels. The match quickly turned into a test of resilience for the Razorbacks, who were unable to contain the Tar Heels’ early onslaught.
North Carolina dominated possession in the opening minutes, forcing two early saves from Arkansas goalkeeper Keegan Smith and earning two penalty opportunities. Midfielder Summer Denigan converted one of those penalties, giving the visitors a 1-0 lead before the 15-minute mark.
The Razorbacks struggled to generate chances, with their first shot not coming until the 27th minute, a wide effort by Vailana Tu’ua. A brief spark arrived when forward Lilliah Blum struck a corner kick to put Arkansas ahead, only for the goal to be nullified by a foul call on goalkeeper Peyton Trayer.
By halftime, North Carolina had outshot Arkansas 10-2 and held a 4-3 edge in corner kicks, while Tar Heels goalkeeper Keegan Smith recorded three saves to preserve the lead.
The second half saw Arkansas press for an equalizer, but a disallowed goal by Bella Field — again halted by a foul on Trayer — underscored the team’s offensive frustration. North Carolina sealed the game with a second goal, finishing with 19 shots and nine corners to Arkansas’s five and four.
Despite the setback, the Razorbacks are scheduled to host No. 23 Clemson on August 27 at Razorback Field, offering a chance to rebound against a ranked opponent.
