A Season of Stars
The annual Reader’s Choice award for top high school flag football player in the Lower Hudson Valley is nearing its deadline, with voting closing at 3 p.m. on June 23. The contest, presented by White Plains Hospital, relies entirely on fan opinion to determine the winner.
What makes this year’s competition especially compelling is the way the field was trimmed. Initial nominations were filtered through postseason honors and coach selections, whittling the pool down to a handful of athletes who have distinguished themselves on the field.
Juliana DiMarino of Westlake/Briarcliff emerges as a dual‑threat dynamo, having amassed 2,931 rushing yards and 2,199 passing yards while accounting for 91 touchdowns. Her versatility has made her a focal point of the vote.
Eve Girardi from Tappan Zee brings a different kind of impact, throwing for 2,832 yards and 55 scores through the air, while adding 1,125 rushing yards and 16 touchdowns on the ground. Her all‑purpose numbers illustrate why she’s a favorite among voters.
Defensive standouts also have their moment in the spotlight. Sarah Sherman of Mamaroneck, the Section 1 Class A Defensive Player of the Year, led her squad in sacks and interceptions, showcasing a knack for disrupting opposing offenses.
Sydney Soliz of Yorktown, crowned Section 1 Class B Defensive Player of the Year, posted 55 sacks and 115 flag pulls, underscoring her relentless pass‑rush presence.
Meanwhile, Hope Ziogas from New Rochelle earned Section 1 Class A Player of the Year after hauling in 69 catches for 829 yards and 15 touchdowns, a testament to her receiving prowess.
As the clock ticks down, the community’s voice will decide which of these standout athletes takes home the honor. The outcome will not only celebrate individual excellence but also highlight the growing popularity of flag football across the region.
