A Strategic Shift for the Red Lions
The 2026 campaign marks a deliberate return to 8‑man football for Cair Paravel, after the program experimented with both 8‑man and 11‑man formats over the past two seasons. Leadership says the smaller roster directly addresses the depth and flexibility challenges that emerged when the team was forced to field 11‑player lineups.
Eleven‑man football requires six additional players, which creates matchup imbalances, limits the number of true substitutes and increases the physical toll on starters who were forced to play both ways without relief. The resulting fatigue was a major factor in the decision to revert to the more manageable 8‑man scheme.
Why 8‑Man Fits the Red Lions
Head coach Randall Bond emphasizes that the team’s skill‑position players are better suited to the faster‑paced, more open nature of 8‑man play. "The smaller format gives us the depth we need to rotate players and keep everyone fresh," Bond said, noting that the scheme aligns with the strengths of his offensive weapons.
Senior Cole Haubold echoed the sentiment, pointing out that the reduced roster allows the Red Lions to experiment with multiple formations and keep opponents guessing. "Having more versatility on the field means we can adapt on the fly and exploit mismatches," Haubold added.
Opening Test Against Erie
The Red Lions will open the season against Erie on Friday, a matchup that will serve as the first real gauge of how the new 8‑man system performs under game conditions. While the opponent is still unknown in terms of strength, the coaching staff is confident that the revised approach will provide the flexibility needed to compete effectively.
