The Detroit Red Wings are confronting a pivotal juncture in their roster construction, as forward Dylan Larkin has publicly requested a trade and veteran Patrick Kane is poised to exit the club.
At the heart of the conversation is Alex DeBrincat, the 27‑year‑old winger who erupted for more than 40 goals last season and has become the focal point of the team’s offensive plans.
DeBrincat, who currently averages roughly 18 minutes of ice time per game, has spent the bulk of his recent tenure on the second line alongside Patrick Kane, forming a productive partnership that helped the club reach the playoffs.
Coaching staff are evaluating a shift that would move DeBrincat to the top line, pairing him with center JT Compher and rookie winger Lucas Raymond, a combination that could generate more sustained pressure in the offensive zone.
The move would also provide opportunities for younger forwards such as Marco Kasper and Emmitt Finnie, who have already logged significant minutes on the top line during the previous season.
While Kasper’s performance dipped last year and he bounced between line combinations, the organization sees his upside as a potential catalyst, especially if paired with veterans like Andrew Copp and Viktor Arvidsson.
DeBrincat’s contract runs through the end of the calendar year, and the front office remains cautious about making the adjustment a permanent fixture, but the immediate goal is to inject firepower into a lineup that currently averages 20 minutes of ice time per night for its top players.
