Michal Postava, a 27‑year‑old goaltender from the Czech Republic, is battling for a backup spot behind veteran John Gibson on the Detroit Red Wings roster.
The Road to Detroit
During his rookie season with the AHL’s Grand Rapids Griffins, Postava appeared in 33 games and posted a 1.71 goals‑against average, allowing just four goals over that stretch. His performance earned him a reputation for composure and reliability between the pipes.
What sets Postava apart is not only his statistical output but also his calm, introverted demeanor. He attributes much of his rapid adaptation to North American hockey to his goalie coach, Roope Koistinen, whose guidance helped smooth the cultural and stylistic transition.
Before arriving in Michigan, Postava honed his craft in the Czech Extraliga, where he played a key role in Kometa Brno’s championship run. The experience gave him a solid foundation and a winning mindset that he now brings to Detroit.
Looking ahead, Postava says he is focused on daily improvement and pushing himself to higher levels, hoping to prove that he can consistently back up Gibson and contribute to the Wings’ success.
