A Homecoming for a Coach With a Proven Track Record
Rekha Patterson was introduced this week as the new head coach of the Red Springs girls basketball team, a program that has struggled to find its footing in recent years. The school board and athletic department announced the hire with optimism that Patterson’s extensive coaching background will translate into immediate improvement on the court.
Patterson arrives with a résumé that spans assistant roles at eight institutions, including Ball State, Creighton, Eastern Illinois, Baylor, Southeast Missouri State, the University of Central Florida and the University of Texas. Her playing years at NC A&T from 1997 to 2001 and a master’s degree earned at Baylor in 2004 provide a personal connection to the sport that she hopes to translate into on‑court success.
From 2015 to 2024 she served as the head coach of the Southeast Missouri women’s program, guiding the team through a period of growth and laying the groundwork for future competitiveness. Her stint at the helm of that program demonstrated her ability to develop talent and manage a roster under challenging circumstances.
She will replace Tenisha McArthur, who stepped down after four seasons, and will be tasked with improving a squad that finished the 2025‑26 campaign with a 3‑19 record. Athletic Director Adam Deese voiced confidence that Patterson’s blend of college‑level experience and deep local ties will revitalize the team.

Patterson has spoken openly about the importance of building cohesion among the players and strengthening ties with the Red Springs community. She sees her appointment as an opportunity to honor her mother, Eva Patterson‑Heath, whose legacy as a legendary coach still resonates in the town. Her philosophy emphasizes teamwork, discipline and a culture of pride that she believes can attract the support the program needs to compete at a higher level.
With the new leadership in place, the Red Devils hope to turn a difficult season into a springboard for future success. The coming weeks will reveal how quickly Patterson can embed her philosophy and begin to shift the program’s trajectory.
