Houston’s Fifth Ward gathered last weekend to honor a man who had been a constant presence on its fields and in its classrooms for more than four decades. A balloon release at the Kashmere football field drew family, friends, former players and community members who shared stories of his selflessness, his relentless work ethic and the way he lifted students beyond the game.
A Coach of Many Sports
Dunham’s résumé reads like a sports encyclopedia. Over his career he guided teams in football, basketball, track, softball, golf, tennis, soccer and wrestling, compiling a record that included 10 playoff appearances and four district championships in football alone. His impact stretched across every season, shaping athletes who would later pursue professional careers.
Mentorship and Community
Beyond wins, he mentored future NFL players such as Rodney Hampton, Vernon Lewis, Vernon Edwards and Antonio Armstrong, and he was known for staying late to tutor students, often paying for equipment out of his own pocket. Former students like Andre’ Walker, Raymond Glass and Darrelniece Nicholson recall how his guidance shaped their lives long after they left the locker room.
Family, Faith and Legacy
His wife, Pamela Dunham, stood beside him through the years, while his daughters, Dayesha Dunham and Danielle Dunham, remember a father who pushed them toward excellence. At Fifth Ward Missionary Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon, Dunham found another avenue to give back, a role echoed by his longtime friend Robert Harmon. The outpouring of grief also included Tiffany Dunham, Demetria Dunham and other relatives who spoke of his unwavering dedication to family.
