Hundreds of mourners gathered on Southern University’s campus this week to pay tribute to Roger Cador, the longtime baseball coach whose name has become synonymous with dedication and mentorship.
A Legacy That Extends Beyond the Diamond
Cador spent more than three decades shaping the Jaguars’ baseball program, guiding the team through 33 seasons and leaving an indelible mark on the university and the sport.
The ceremony featured reflections from several figures who had crossed paths with Cador, including Wilbert Ellis, former Grambling State University head baseball coach, as well as LSU legend Skip Bertman and former MLB All‑Star Rickie Weeks, each recalling the coach’s humility and the lasting impression he made.
Former players spoke of Cador as a father figure, with Tony Williams noting how the coach emphasized life lessons and personal growth over mere athletic achievement.
Rev. William Bates highlighted Cador’s selflessness, describing a man who placed the success of his students above his own recognition.
In a move that underscores the university’s commitment to preserving his legacy, officials announced plans to install a prominent acknowledgment at the baseball stadium, ensuring that future generations will remember the coach’s contributions.
