A Vision Takes Shape
Wendy Damonte, co‑founder and chief executive of Reno Pro Soccer, announced this week that the organization is pursuing a USL Championship franchise for Reno. The proposal, she said, is more than a team; it is a comprehensive entertainment precinct that would anchor a new soccer‑specific stadium, retail and dining venues, and a public gathering space designed to become a year‑round community hub.
The stadium concept envisions a 7,000‑seat venue built to FIFA standards, with modular seating that can expand for concerts and cultural events. Adjacent mixed‑use development plans call for a pedestrian‑friendly district that blends local businesses with public art, aiming to create a destination that draws both fans and residents who may not traditionally follow soccer.
World Cup Timing and Market Opportunity
Organizers point to the recent surge of interest in soccer following the FIFA World Cup as a catalyst for launching a professional club in Reno. By tapping into the heightened visibility of the sport, they hope to convert casual viewers into season ticket holders and build a sustainable fan base that can support the franchise beyond the initial excitement.
City officials have expressed cautious optimism, noting that the project could generate jobs, increase tourism, and stimulate investment in surrounding neighborhoods. If approved, the development would place Reno among a growing list of mid‑size U.S. cities leveraging soccer’s rising popularity to revitalize urban cores.
