Structural Changes and Mental Health in Retired Players
A recent study conducted by Imperial College London has drawn attention to the long‑term neurological effects experienced by retired professional soccer players in the United Kingdom.
Using magnetic resonance imaging, researchers compared 142 former players with a group of 56 healthy volunteers, focusing on structural differences in regions that govern memory and emotion.
The scans revealed modest reductions in grey‑matter volume in those areas among the athletes, though only two percent displayed severe shrinkage that would qualify as individual signs of neurodegeneration.
Despite these anatomical variations, the participants performed on par with the control cohort on standard memory and reasoning tests, showing no measurable decline in cognitive function.
Notably, a large proportion of the former players reported symptoms of anxiety and depression, with 42 percent meeting clinical thresholds for anxiety and 31 percent for depression.
The investigators stress that while the findings highlight a link between repetitive head impacts and mental‑health outcomes, they do not establish a direct cause of Alzheimer’s disease, and long‑term follow‑up is planned to monitor dementia risk.
