Rhode Island FC has confirmed a loan agreement that will see midfielder Clay Holstad join MLS side FC Dallas for the remainder of the 2026 campaign, with an option to purchase the player at the end of the season.
A Historic First for Rhode Island FC
Holstad arrived in Pawtucket as a rookie in 2024 and quickly became a cornerstone of the side, contributing ten goals and eight assists while earning a reputation for striking from distance. His long‑range efforts, including a memorable winner against Louisville City FC and a stoppage‑time equaliser versus Detroit City FC, helped the club capture the 2024 USL Championship Eastern Conference Title and reach the finals in both 2024 and 2025.
Before his professional debut, Holstad was selected by Columbus Crew in the second round of the 2023 MLS SuperDraft and spent time with Columbus Crew 2 in the MLS NEXT Pro league. He later graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from the University of Kentucky, where he also earned multiple NCAA Tournament appearances.
The loan represents the first time a player from Rhode Island FC has moved to a Major League Soccer club, a milestone that has been met with excitement by fans, teammates and staff alike. Club president Khano Smith praised Holstad’s work ethic and highlighted the move as a testament to the club’s growing influence in American soccer.
