Milestone in College Football
The Walter Payton Award, which honors the most outstanding offensive player in the Football Championship Subdivision, will celebrate its 40th anniversary next year, underscoring four decades of recognizing top talent.
Devin Farrell, a senior quarterback for Rhode Island, returns after a prolific 2025 campaign in which he completed 267 of 410 passes for 3,745 yards and 24 touchdowns. His average of 267.5 yards per game placed him seventh nationally, and his performance helped the Rams secure a second consecutive Colonial Athletic Association title.
Wide receiver Marquis Buchanan, also a senior, topped the FCS with 1,337 receiving yards last season, catching 78 passes and scoring eight touchdowns. Over his career he has amassed 202 receptions for 3,099 yards, positioning him among the program’s all‑time greats.
Chasing a Final Impact
Both players are entering their final year of eligibility with the goal of translating individual excellence into a national award, a prospect that could cement their legacy at Rhode Island.
Coach Dan McGinnis praised the duo’s work ethic, noting that their leadership has set a standard for underclassmen and reinforced the team’s belief that they can compete for a championship again.
The Rams’ recent back‑to‑back CAA championships have heightened expectations, and the coaching staff believes that Farrell’s arm strength combined with Buchanan’s route precision could make them the first Rhode Island players to earn the Payton Award.
Looking Forward
As the season approaches, analysts will watch closely to see whether the pair can sustain their momentum and translate preseason buzz into on‑field dominance.
