A Season Defined by Skill and Leadership
Rhyan Mongelli capped his high school career with the Avalanche‑Journal's baseball player of the year award, a testament to a season that blended dominance on the mound with a potent bat. His name appeared on the all‑district first team as a pitcher and he earned District 2‑6A offensive MVP honors, underscoring his all‑around impact.
At the plate, Mongelli posted a .445 batting average with a .547 on‑base percentage and a .714 slugging percentage, compiling 53 hits that included 12 doubles, four triples and four home runs. He also drew 21 walks, scored 34 runs and drove in 38 RBIs, numbers that placed him among the most feared hitters in the region.
On the mound, he was nearly untouchable, going 9‑0 in 512⅔ innings with a 1.35 ERA and 55 strikeouts. The reliability he showed allowed the Tigers to lean on him in critical moments, guiding the team to the regional semifinals and cementing his reputation as a clutch performer.
Coach Chad Reynolds praised Mongelli's work ethic and leadership, noting that the player's dedication set a standard for the entire program. "His consistency and willingness to lead by example made him the backbone of the team," Reynolds said, highlighting how Mongelli's influence extended beyond statistics.
Looking ahead, Mongelli has committed to continuing his baseball career at Odessa College, where he will join as a two‑way player. He envisions building on the foundation he created at Frenship and aims to push his game to the next level, with aspirations of eventually reaching professional opportunities.
Mongelli's versatility — capable of excelling both as a pitcher and a position player — has made him a model for younger athletes in the Lubbock area. His journey from a high school standout to a collegiate prospect illustrates the power of hard work, adaptability and a relentless pursuit of excellence.
