Richmond Opens Atlantic 10 Series with 4-1 Victory
The Richmond baseball team opened its Atlantic 10 Conference series with a decisive 4-1 victory over Saint Louis on Tuesday, handing the Billikens their first loss of the weekend.
The Spiders struck first in the opening frame when Evan Wilson crossed the plate on a ground out by RJ Johnson Jr., setting an early tone.
On the mound, Chase Topolski delivered four solid innings, allowing just one run on two hits while striking out five, but it was Chayse Gruber who earned the win after tossing three shutout frames, scattering three hits and fanning four batters.
Relief pitcher Justin Gay capped the outing with two innings of work, punching out three opponents and preserving the lead for the final stretch.
Fourth Inning Heroics
In the fourth inning, Wilson doubled down the left‑field line to score Aidan O’Keefe from first, giving Richmond a 2-1 lead.
The Spiders added two more insurance runs in the seventh, extending their cushion before a clutch hit from Dylan Winebrenner drove in Michael Elko to push the lead to 4-1.
Wilson’s two‑bagger down the left‑field line not only plated O’Keefe but also ignited a rally that would prove pivotal later in the game.
Winebrenner’s second hit of the day, a line drive up the middle, set up Elko’s scoring play, sealing the victory and giving the team momentum heading into the next matchup.
With the series now tied 1‑1, both clubs will reconvene for the second game, where Richmond hopes to carry the momentum generated by its balanced attack and resilient pitching.
