A New Hub for Ice Hockey
The Richmond Ice Box opened its doors this week in Chesterfield, Virginia, introducing a 49,000‑square‑foot indoor hockey complex that houses an NHL‑sized rink and 350 spectator seats. The venue is designed to serve players of all ages, from youth leagues to adult recreational teams, as well as figure‑skating enthusiasts and the general public.
Operated by Chesterfield Sports Enterprises, the brainchild of local hockey booster Fred Festa, the arena features a dedicated OrthoVirginia Arena, the first ice sheet named for a multi‑year sponsorship with the regional orthopedic provider. The partnership not only supplies branding but also underscores the facility’s commitment to athlete health and safety.
Ryan Winfree, president of the Ice Box and Ice Den, highlighted the strategic location, noting that the Chesterfield site builds on momentum generated by the smaller Powhatan rink that opened in 2021. He emphasized that the new complex is intended to become a cornerstone for developing talent in the region.
Future plans call for a substantial expansion to roughly 90,000 square feet, adding two professional‑level ice sheets and increasing spectator capacity to 700. Winfree said the expansion is part of a broader vision to attract a professional ice hockey franchise to Richmond, a goal that aligns with earlier concepts such as the GreenCity mixed‑use development in neighboring Henrico County.
Beyond competition, the venue aims to foster community engagement by offering public skating sessions, youth clinics and adult leagues, thereby reinforcing hockey’s growing footprint in Virginia. Local officials and sponsors alike view the arena as a catalyst for economic activity and a rallying point for the sport’s future in the Richmond metropolitan area.
