A personal portrait beyond the scoreboard
The documentary titled "It’s Not About Me" will debut on the Tennessee Athletics YouTube channel on July 30 at 7:30 p.m., inviting viewers into the private world of one of college basketball’s most enduring figures.
Over the past year, a team of nine undergraduates and two graduate students from the university’s school of media and journalism, led by Isaac Fowler, devoted countless hours to crafting the film. Allie Campbell, a journalism major, estimates she and her peers spent between ten and fifteen hours each week outside of class on research, shooting, and editing.
The project was a collaboration between the university’s communications arm, VFL Films, and the athletics department, serving both as professional training for the students and as a unique piece of content for the men’s basketball program.
At its heart, the film follows Barnes’ journey from his upbringing in Hickory, North Carolina, through his rise to prominence in Knoxville and beyond. Interviews with his wife Candy, son Nick and daughter Carley reveal a man who describes himself as goofy at times, intense at others, and always anchored by his faith.
Through candid conversations with former players and reflections on his own transformation, the documentary examines Barnes’ evolving relationship with winning, commitment, and personal purpose, offering a rare glimpse beyond the X’s and O’s of the game.
