Rick Klimchock, a 70‑year‑old veteran of high school basketball, has been appointed head coach of the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg’s women’s program, marking his first foray into college‑level coaching.
His career spans 425 wins across several Western Pennsylvania high schools, including stints at Saltsburg, Greensburg Salem, Franklin Regional and Jeannette.
Klimchock previously assisted the Saint Vincent men’s squad in 2006‑07 and contributed to local radio at WCNS, keeping him embedded in the regional basketball community.
Reviving a Storied Program
The university’s athletic director highlighted Klimchock’s deep local ties and his reputation for developing talent as decisive factors in the hiring decision, noting that the program has not posted a winning record since the 2022‑23 season.
The team finished the previous campaign with a 1‑24 record, dropping 18 games in a row before the departure of former coach Julie Bolden, who led the club for two seasons.
Klimchock says his primary goal is to restore enjoyment and camaraderie to the program, emphasizing recruitment of local players who can grow together.
He hopes to build a culture where friendships extend beyond the court, aiming to bring stability and a winning mindset back to Greensburg.
The appointment also brings a familial connection, as his son Chris Klimchock is involved in the program’s administrative side, adding depth to the team’s future.
