Freshman forward Rider Portela is adjusting to a larger-than-expected rookie class as he begins his college career at the University of Colorado.
A Deepening Roster
Portela is not alone; the Buffaloes' freshman class has swelled to seven players, including Julian Hammond III, Jalin Holland, Ian Inman, Josiah Sanders, Alex Dickeson, Chase Hill, Eric Jacobsen, Amir Jones, Goc Malual, Luke Mirhashemi, and David Gomez, all of whom are learning under head coach Tad Boyle.
Under Boyle's guidance, Portela is adapting to the faster tempo of college basketball, embracing the new coaching style while seeking to maximize his development over the next four years.
The Arizona native credits his father, a coach, with instilling a disciplined mindset that helps him balance academics in Boulder with athletic ambitions.
Portela plans to remain with the Buffaloes through all four seasons, valuing long‑term growth over fleeting exposure, and he is using summer sessions to acclimate to college life and the new environment.
