Rikuu Nishida stepped onto the big-league stage on Monday, earning his first start in right field and batting ninth for the Chicago White Sox. He recorded a single in his debut, contributing to a 3-1 loss against Minnesota.
A quick start in the majors
The following day he returned to the lineup, going 1-for-4 with another single and scoring a run that tied the game at 2-2 in the eighth inning. Though the White Sox ultimately fell 5-3 in 11 innings, the performances marked a solid introduction to MLB for the Japanese prospect.
Nishida's college career at Oregon set the stage for this call-up. In 2023 he batted .312, hit five home runs, added 16 doubles and stole a single-season record 25 bases, earning honorable‑mention All‑Pac‑12 honors.
After two seasons at Mt. Hood Community College, he transferred to Oregon and quickly became a standout on the Ducks. His speed and base‑running instincts translated into a strong minor‑league track record, where over four seasons he posted a .290 average and amassed 110 stolen bases.
The White Sox drafted Nishida in the 11th round of the 2023 draft, a move that has now paid immediate dividends. Hailing from Japan, the outfielder brings a blend of contact hitting and aggressive baserunning that could make him a valuable asset in the team's lineup.
