Riley Pickels, the senior goalkeeper for the Hough Huskies, has been crowned the 2026 Gatorade North Carolina Girls Soccer Player of the Year, a distinction that underscores her dominant presence between the posts.
A Legacy in the Making
During the recent campaign the Huskies posted a 22‑4 record and advanced to the fourth round of the state playoffs, a run in which Pickels turned the net into a fortress, posting a 94.5% save percentage and 17 shutouts while making 121 stops.
Beyond her defensive heroics, Pickels also contributed three goals and two assists, showing a rare blend of shot‑stopping and attacking flair that helped shape crucial moments.
She carries a 4.54 GPA and devotes time to volunteer projects, embodying the scholar‑athlete ideal that the Gatorade award celebrates.
Coach Kim Montgomery of Ardrey Kell High School praised Pickels as a game‑changer, noting that she follows in the footsteps of former Huskies star Ashlynn Serepca, who captured the honor in back‑to‑back years of 2016 and 2017.
The recognition adds to a growing narrative of excellence within North Carolina soccer, a state where high‑school talent is increasingly scouted for collegiate programs across the country.
Pickels' combination of athletic achievement and academic rigor positions her as a role model for younger players, and her upcoming college decision will be watched closely by programs eager to add a proven leader to their rosters.
